Healing Instructions
-
Make sure you get a full nights rest. Drink lots of water and avoid alcohol. eat a large meal with carbs and protein to help with your energy and blood sugar during the tattoo.
You're welcome to bring snacks and water but they will also be provided if anything was left behind.
Wear comfortable, dark colored clothing you wouldn't mind getting ink on.
-
After getting your tattoo, it's common for it to feel sore or similar to a sunburn for the first few hours. If discomfort persists, consider taking a dose of ibuprofen to reduce swelling. Be sure to relax when you get home, eat a good hearty meal and elevate the tattoo if possible to reduce soreness.
-
I normally use an aftercare wrap commonly called Saniderm. It's a clear all adhesive bandage that can keep the tattoo protected for days during the most crucial part of the healing process. Though I recommend to use this, it doesn't work well for people who have skin irritations to band-aides or medical tape.
If you're using Saniderm, aim to keep it on for at least 48 hours. However, if it begins to leak or come off, remove it in a sanitary environment and wash the tattoo thoroughly.
If you experience itching similar to a rash or burn, you might be sensitive to the adhesives. If this happens, remove it and cleanse the area immediately.
-
After you remove the Saniderm, cleanse your tattoo with a white unscented soap for sensitive skin or brands like Cetaphil.
Create a lather in your hands and gently massage the tattoo in circular motions before rinsing with lukewarm water.Pat dry with a clean towel or paper towel, avoiding rough textures.
Moisturize as needed, especially when the skin feels tight or itchy(dry). Note that the moisturizer serves more for comfort than healing, so apply it sparingly.
-
Avoid direct sunlight! A fresh tattoo is extremely sensitive to UV for the first month or so. While it's healing, shield it from the sun or cover with a lightweight, breathable fabric. Once the tattoo is finished peeling(minimum 2 weeks), you can begin applying sunscreen. Do not rebandage once the initial covering is removed.
-
Avoid submerging your tattoo in water for a minimum of 2-3 weeks. If the tattoo appears dry, flaky, or is peeling, avoid soaking. This rule extends to bathtubs, pools, hot tubs, saunas, and prolonged hot showers. Use a fan or slightly open the door during hot showers, or take a shorter one.
-
Don't pick at scabs or scratch your tattoo. Also, be cautious of abrasive clothing or tight/heavy accessories(bra straps, purses, backpacks)
Also keep in mind heavy objects, furniture edges, or pets.
-
If your pets sleep with you in bed change the sheets before you take the bandage off. Then during the day make your bed nice and tight during the day to minimize pet dander exposure while you sleep.
This also applies to furniture, if your pets lay on the couch, grab a top sheet from the linen closet and cover your section so you don't have to worry about deep cleaning when you should be resting.
